There are a lot of ways to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day that don’t involve Irish whiskey, but with such a good excuse, why not indulge? Besides, stick with Irish whiskey, and it’s easier to avoid green food coloring in your glass.

Recipe: Irish Kilt

  • 2 oz. Irish whiskey
  • 1 oz. Scotch
  • 1 oz. lemon juice
  • 1 oz. simple syrup
  • 3 dashes orange bitters
  1. Combine all the ingredients in a shaker filled with ice.
  2. Shake well to combine.
  3. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass.
  4. Serve garnished with a lemon or orange twist.

And speaking of green food coloring, repeat after me:

Green beer is not Irish.
Cutesy green drinks are not Irish.
Crème de menthe is not Irish.

Please, as a personal favor to The BeerLady, don’t sully St. Patrick’s Day by putting green food coloring in fizzy yellow mass market beer and calling it Irish. Guinness, Harp, Irish whiskey – now, that’s Irish.
